About Half-Cup Calm
Realistic systems and honest stories for working moms who are tired of carrying everything in their heads.

Hi, I’m Kayla
My husband and I both work full-time jobs, and we’re raising two little boys, four and one. Plus Diggle, our corgi, who is very invested in whatever falls off the high chair.
A normal weeknight at our house looks like this: two work calendars that don’t always agree, daycare pickup, and three versions of the same dinner (one for us, one for the four-year-old, one cut into tiny pieces for the baby), made while two hangry kids negotiate for snacks and a corgi supervises from the floor. Someone needs a shoe. Someone needs a form signed by tomorrow. My coffee from this morning is still on the counter, half finished.
We’re a good team. But for a while it felt like we were both just keeping our heads above water, and most of what was sinking us wasn’t the work itself. It was the remembering. The laundry, the calendar and the mental load all blurred together, and trying harder didn’t fix it.
What did fix it, slowly, was building better systems around us. That’s what this blog is.
Why “Half-Cup Calm”
Because most mornings I get about half a cup of coffee before someone needs me, and I’ve decided that’s enough.
Half-Cup Calm is the idea that you don’t need a full cup to have a good day: not a full hour to yourself, not a perfectly balanced week, not a house that stays clean. Half is enough, as long as the rest of your life is set up to carry some of the weight. I wrote more about that in what Half-Cup Calm really means.
What I believe
- Systems beat willpower. If something only works when you remember to do it, it isn’t a system yet.
- The mental load is real work. Getting it out of your head and onto paper (or a wall, or a shared calendar) is half the battle.
- Either parent should be able to pick it up. The best setups are the ones that don’t depend on whoever happens to remember.
- Good enough counts. A mostly clean kitchen and a mostly on-time morning is a win.
- Less stuff, less to manage. Every thing you own is a thing to put away. I’d rather own less.

From my half cup to yours
If you’ve ever stood in your kitchen holding a lukewarm coffee, wondering how everyone else seems to have it together: they don’t. Most of us just don’t say so.
I’m glad you’re here. Take what’s useful, skip what isn’t, and come back whenever you need a little room to breathe.
